I recently stopped in the Hippodrome Barber Shop in Woodlawn with my daughter, Riley, and my friend, and photographer, T. Scott. We had heard about the Hippodrome and its owner, Vincent Oliver, but had never been there.

Upon entering, we were immediately welcomed by a visual feast of vintage toys, various relics, and a real barber. We spent some time absorbing some of  the Hippodrome’s offerings and chatted with Mr. Oliver about his work, his family, and his collections.

After growing up in Woodlawn, he attended barber school in a nearby town then returned to begin his career.  In 1966 he opened the Hippodrome and has been there ever since. For 43 years male patrons of all ages have received freehand haircuts (Mr. Oliver doesn’t believe in clipper guards), conversation, and bubblegum.  Some of the Hippodrome’s current customers have been around since it opened. One man drives 86 miles round trip every two weeks to have his hair cut by his long-time friend and barber.

Yesterday I returned for a second time with my son, Brady, for a much-needed haircut. He was mesmerized by the toys (especially the firetruck) and posters. And the bubble gum. Luckily, the jar was full so Brady was encouraged to grab a few extra pieces.

I hate that I didn’t visit the Hippodrome when we first made this neighborhood our home. Better late than never. We now have a new barber for my son, and a new connection to our place.  If you’re in the area you should stop by some time. The Hippodrome is located at 5530 First Avenue North and is open Tuesday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm and on Saturdays from 8:30am-12pm.
