Please join the35212 and The Birmingham Art Collective at Crestwood Coffee on April 1, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for an opening reception for Dréa Zacharenko’s latest work, A Common Thread. This illustration series explores the connections between objects and memories and will be on display at Crestwood Coffee throughout the month of April.

Inspired by many areas of art study, Dréa  combines principles of both studio art and graphic design in her dynamic mixed media pieces. She often begins work with either a birch board panel or a chipboard panel. She attempts to translate the world around her, often literally, gathering scraps of paper with simplified shapes and handwritten text and incorporating them into her work. Her work shows a constant attempt to make a better connection with her surroundings. Her sketchy, rough style forms a sort of stream-of-consciousness dialogue that involves the viewer in her pursuit to connect the dots of daily life. She studied at Louisiana Tech University, receiving a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and Studio Art 2-D. She is a native of Louisiana and has made Birmingham her home since 2007.

I'm a wife, mama, friend, daughter and neighbor with a passion for community development, the arts and social justice. I spend a lot of my time caring for my family, having conversations, walking my dog and sitting on my front porch. I believe life is story. And I'm living proof that art, music and dance can help make everything better. I write about my neighborhood and my city at the35212.com, and I volunteer with Desert Island Supply Co., a creative writing nonprofit based in Woodlawn.
