Nearby: Moe’s Original Bar B Que A Great Dining Option In Lakeview

I always loved the atmosphere and location of the former Lakeview Oyster House. Whether you were sitting outside, inside near the bar or in any of the other nooks and crannies throughout the building, it was a great place for conversation, meeting up with friends or enjoying some porch sitting (which is usually the only way I like to enjoy the outdoors).

In its new incarnation as Moe’s Original Bar B Que, the restaurant maintains the charm of its predecessor’s atmosphere and offers a varied and delicious menu.

At Moe’s, you order at the counter, greatly increasing the efficiency of the service. It’s a great lunch spot when you have limited time and a
good restaurant for a relaxed dinner.

Everything at Moe’s is smoked so the meat is tender and flavorful. The wings were yummy with just the right amount of heat for someone who isn’t in to very spicy foods, and it’s never been easier for me to clean a rib.

The pork was good, but relatively standard of what you’d expect from a BBQ joint, as was the red sauce.

If there’s a real standout at Moe’s, it’s the poultry. The chicken was delicious and served in hearty portions. And the turkey, which I didn’t expect to find on the menu, was wonderful. I gobbled up my share of turkey (no pun intended) before my dinner companion had a shot at extra slices. Both meats were moist and flavorful, and while the white BBQ sauce wasn’t quite at the Miss Myra’s level, it was incredibly tasty.

When it came to sides, my dining partner raved about the baked beans while I finished off the mac ‘n’ cheese. I’m also not usually a fan of greens, but I went back for a second helping after deciding I had to try them in the name of good food tasting/criticism. They seemed to have just the right texture, and I might have to reconsider my greens stance after our dinner. The black-eyed peas were also good, but not a stand out.

Another menu item I left raving about was the cornbread. It, too, wasn’t at all dry, and why I usually don’t like jalapenos in my cornbread, I finished off my large serving very quickly and would have had seconds if it weren’t for the pork, chicken, wings, ribs, macaroni, turkey and beans that I’d already put away.

Not being a banana fan, I had to leave both dessert portions to my dining partner, and he didn’t complain. He thought the nutmeg was an excellent addition to a traditional banana pudding recipe and probably would have had a third or fourth portion if they’d been available.

Moe’s Original Bar B Que is a great complement to the restaurants of Lakeview, and I look forward to my next visit. The only problem I foresee is choosing which delightful entrees to have first.

Moe’s is located at 731 29th Street South in Lakeview and can be reached at (205) 252-5888. Visit their website for information about their other locations.

Editor’s Note: Because we try to be honest and authentic around here, you should know that Moe’s reached out to us about doing a review. And, Laurel and her dining partner’s meal was on the house.
